Proper labeling is essential for patient safety and lab accuracy. This guide explains how to print patient specimen labels from the lab system using approved label printers.
Before You Begin
- Make sure your label printer is powered on and connected
- Confirm the correct label roll is loaded (usually 51mm x 25mm for pathology labels)
- Ensure you are logged into the lab system with the correct permissions
Step-by-Step: Printing Labels
- Search for the Patient
- Log into the lab system and search for the patient by MRN or name
- Confirm the correct date of birth and visit details
- Select Test Orders
- Choose the appropriate test(s) from the patient’s order list
- Click Generate Labels
- Choose Label Printer
- Select your nearest label printer from the dropdown list
- Confirm it's displaying as "Ready" or "Online"
- Print
- Click Print Labels
- Collect the labels and confirm all patient identifiers are correct
Troubleshooting Tips
- Blank labels printing? Check that the roll is loaded facing the correct direction
- Label misalignment? Calibrate the printer using the Feed button or printer settings
- No labels printing? Check the printer is set as default on your workstation and restart both the lab system and the printer
If labels are still not printing, contact IT support. Include:
- Printer ID and location
- Patient MRN (if applicable)
- A screenshot of the error or issue
